We love the Keys in late March, and have always lucked out with good weather then. Your kids are old enough to enjoy one of the best things about the Keys: sea kayaking. The shallow backwaters (on the north side of US 1) offer a wonderful peek into the natural side of the Keys. You'll see twisty, gnarly stands of mangrove and beautiful birds like osprey, herons, and roseate spoonbills. Several outfitters rent kayaks and offer guided,
naturalist-type tours. It's just as pleasant to go on your own, though, at your own pace, and take in the awesome, languid beauty of the coast. We mention this because it's a perfect complement to the crazy scene of Key West, with its sunset celebrations and conch train tours!
Here's another tip: The Keys are a great place to find the ultimate cheap sleep: camping. The best beach you can sleep on is Bahia Honda State Park on Big Pine Key. The sand is baby-powder white, with silver palms providing the perfect tropical touch. The park offers campsites (with bathhouses, snack bars, etc.) but you're probably too late to reserve for this March, unless you can luck into one of the eight first-come, first-served sites (arrive before 8 A.M.). Call (305) 872-2353 or visit Florida Department of Environmental Protection(open daily, 8am-sundown). KOA operates a couple of campgrounds with loads of amenities on Fiesta Key and Sugarloaf Key. They're not quiet, but they're inexpensive, well-located places to stay ($167/day for a 1 room motel with kitchen ($147 per day without a kitchen);open all year). Call (800) KOA-7730 or visit KOA Kampgrounds.
Not into camping? We hear only good things about Southernmost Motel on Duval Street in Key West. This casual 127-unit family resort is close to the beach (one street away), but not right on it, which probably accounts for the low-ish rate: around $235 per night, depending on season. They offer bike rentals, a pool, and close proximity to the action--which may well appeal to the kids! Call (800) 354-4455 or visit Southernmost Resorts. Also, away from the bustle of Key West, is Hawk's Cay Resort on Marathon Key. Recently renovated, the resort offers villas with full kitchens (you save on restaurant meals) and washer/dryers. They also have a hotel on the premises, priced less than the villas, naturally. They're located on a lagoon, not a beach, and offer watersports and rentals. Rates range from $199-$300 for the motel rooms per night, depending on season. The average price for a villa for two adults and two kids is around $530 per night also depending on the season. Call 888-443-6393 or visit Hawk's Cay Resort for specific rates.
