What We Learned on Our Summer Vacation

Our family's weeklong adventure at an educational nature camp

by Jonathan Adolph
Our days at COA were filled with a broad range of nature-oriented outings, covering everything from local geology to the world of bats. On average, we'd have two or three programs a day, each led by a naturalist or camp guide. I soon saw the benefits of having all these local experts on hand. Our guides made even a casual van trip through the park interesting (pointing out, say, an ancient sea cave hidden in the woods), and they knew of places you'd be hard-pressed to discover on your own, such as the trail we hiked with the incredible blueberries and the Maine Granite Industry Historical Society Museum, housed, oddly enough, in a local lawn mower dealership.
