As part of our camp package, COA set us up on three water tours: a whale watch, a nature cruise to see seals and puffins, and what turned out to be a highlight of our trip, an evening at Diver Ed's Dive-In Theater. Diver Ed is Eddie Monat, a wild-haired cross between John Belushi and Jacques Cousteau whose idea of fun is kissing live sea creatures and overinflating his scuba suit so amusing noises blow out the neckhole. A COA graduate who was often seen wandering the campus in his wet suit, Ed has outfitted his 48-foot tour boat with a huge projection-screen TV and tethered video camera. The rig allows his comfortably seated guests to vicariously accompany him down into the frigid depths of Bar Harbor's Frenchman Bay, where he and Mini-Ed (a Playmobil diver tied to his camera to give a sense of scale in the videos) collect lobsters, sea stars, and other creatures that are then examined--and smooched--on board. Understandably, the mix of zany humor, a huge television, and slimy sea life proved irresistible. "This camp is fun," Nick admitted after watching Ed in action. "I thought it was going to be all this learning, like, "Here's this rock, it's really hard.' It's actually funner than I expected."
