In summer, when wildflowers bloom and lift lines are a memory, ski resorts offer mountains of magic at prices that are 20 to 45 percent less than winter rates. Throughout July and August, there is a lot to do on the slopes: Hike the trails; take the lifts up the mountain and pedal by bicycle to the base; horseback ride through fields of pine and enjoy outdoor arts and music festivals. Children keep happily busy with kids' programs that make the most of the sweet summer weather. With plentiful condominiums and hotel rooms, it's likely that you can find a mountain retreat to fit your family's needs. Read on for one the most interesting mountain programs and deals.

HEAD TO WATERVILLE VALLEY

Waterville Valley has the White Mountain National Forest as a backdrop. In summer this ski resort transforms itself into a sports-oriented family getaway. You and your older kids can enjoy golfing, in-line skating and mountain biking. You can also sample the mountain scenery on guided discovery tours and orienteering tours offered by the Adventure Center at Waterville Valley, and sign up for advanced and novice hiking and mountain biking sessions. At the Waterville Valley Summer Recreation Camp, kids ages four to 12 enjoy fishing, arts and crafts and nature walks, as well as an evening program. Camp begins in June and concludes at the end of August.

The 1999 Summer Unlimited package was $69 per person, for one night's lodging in a country inn, lodge or condominium. Children 12 and under stay free with parents. The package includes access to the White Mountain Athletic Club and pool, a ride on Snow Mountain's chairlift, two-hour per day rental of a mountain bike, boating, hiking, unlimited tennis court time and one nine-hole round of golf.
