The grand lodges of our nation's national parks blend European-style elegance with rustic American design. Many were built in the early 1900s by railroad companies looking to promote tourism and, in an effort to attract wealthy and influential guests, no expense was spared.
The National Park Service took over in 1916 and continued to build lodges in a grand style. Today, some 49 examples exist including 12 "Great Lodges."
And while the classic lodges still draw their share of VIPs, they also lure family vacationers looking to soak up the beauty and history of these grand facilities. With their rustic charm and pristine settings, these lodges offer an aura of romance and tradition that can't be equaled. Perhaps that's why some visitors are willing to wait a year or more for a $200-per-night room.
