The place: Sonoran Glass Art Academy, Tucson, ArizonaWho visited: Susan and Rick Staunton of Plymouth, Minnesota, and their daughter, Elizabeth, age 11
Why they loved it: The Staunton family discovered this glassblowing school for kids and adults during a Southwest vacation. "This is one of the few places in the country where families can try glassblowing without taking a full course," says Susan. "It took us only 30 minutes each to make our pieces of glass art." After Elizabeth decided to make a globe-shaped ornament, the staff melted the glass for her, then patiently guided her through the process of coloring and shaping it. Susan also made an ornament, while Rick learned how to make a bowl. The academy shipped the finished pieces to their home. "We had a phenomenal experience," Susan says. "The teachers were so welcoming, and it was just amazing to see that liquid harden into glass."
What it cost: The Stauntons paid $45 per ornament and $55 for the bowl. The academy also hosts gallery sales, studio tours, and events, such as a glassblowing competition every February. Appointments are required.
