Out of the Box

Turn unwanted holiday packaging into a quick-and-easy drum kit

by Ellen Harter Wall

BOTTLE CYMBAL

1.   Place a wrapping paper tube over the neck of a 2-liter bottle and trace it with a permanent marker.
2.   Use a craft knife to poke a hole, then cut along the line with scissors.
3.   For extra stage presence, wrap colorful tape around the tube, then insert it into the bottle. Tape the tube to the bottle as shown.

PIE TIN CYMBAL

1.   Fill a pie plate with packing peanuts (to keep it from collapsing when played) and 2 tablespoons of rice (for a fun sound). Tape another pie plate on top (we used electrical tape, but duct tape works well too).
2.   Wrap about 4 inches of a wrapping paper tube with duct tape. Cut 1 1/2-inch-long slits, then splay the end of the tube onto the pie plate as shown.
3.   Use duct tape to secure the tube to the plate.
