Games on Ice
A cutting-edge skate date for your kids and their friends

RING RIDES
This simple slider is a hit with kids of all ages. Just attach a leash, towline, or rope to the handle of a snow tube, nestle your child securely inside (wearing boots, not skates), and away you go!

CRATE RACES
For a fun, frosty challenge, stack two plastic crates upside down on top of each other (duct-tape or tie them together for extra stability). Little skaters can practice by pushing the crates or even racing each other. Pick a smooth stretch of ice without bumps or cracks.
SKATING TIPS
- Don't skate anywhere you're not sure is safe. Contact your park, recreation, or police department to find out which areas have been approved for skating. Flag cracks and bumps in the ice with a boot or cone.
- Helmets are a good idea for all skaters. A hockey helmet with a face shield provides the best protection. The Consumer Product Safety Commission also suggests using a bike, skateboard, or ski helmet.
- Sharpen skate blades at least once a season, more often if you skate frequently. Many sports shops and most rinks sharpen on-site for a small fee. Call ahead to check hours and waiting time.
- Start even the youngest children on single-blade skates, so they can get the feel of balancing and gliding on the ice.
